Planning and Running a Charity Lottery Made Easier

December 24, 2019 by Susan Paige

You can’t overstate the importance of running a charity lottery of any kind. Even as little as a charity lotto can be, it can still effectively raise funds and achieve your financial goals when well-thought-out and planned. Charity lotteries have been around since time immemorial.

It’s a form of “incentivized giving” where you reward the people who support your cause with cash gifts and other items. Nothing encourages supporters to donate than the sense of winning something in return. Why? Because humans love getting rewarded. So running a charity lottery works so well for charity groups and organizations looking to raise funds for their special causes.

Setting up a Lottery

To increase your level of donations, a good planning process is required. Because setting up a charity lottery is not a cakewalk. It’s both easy and equally challenging. However, a lot will depend on where exactly you’ll be running the draw. And the size of the lottery itself.

These factors can determine whether your lottery will be difficult or easy to set up – especially on the legal side of things. In some countries, for example, setting up a lottery is a smooth sail. In others, it’s a different story.

Also, consider the number of supporters donating to your cause. How many are they? If they are donating a few amounts of money every week, then running your lottery will be more like a child’s play. However, things get more complex when your supporters donate more money per year, as you’ll be required to get a license before getting started.

Promote Your Charity Lottery

Before you start your lottery, it’s important to get the word out about when you plan to start. To put it another way, promote your lottery as much as possible to your existing supporters using social media networks. Or any other form of communication channels available to you.

The idea is to let supporters know when to sign-up for the first draw. So, communicate to them early enough the set date of the first to draw. The first draw is likely to provide greater returns as people are often pulled toward a new thing.

Even as the draw continues, don’t stop promoting and updating existing supporters about it. The more they get involved, the more they want to continue supporting your cause. Constantly promote your winners on a weekly or monthly basis.

Remember to also sensationalize their winning stories. It pulls in more supporters and players, which translates to more donations over time. It’s a marketing strategy that most charity groups take advantage of – and for a good reason.

Charity lotteries are effective tools in raising funds for organizations, charity groups, and individuals running a special cause. But proper planning is required to keep donations flowing for days on end, and consistently. Because without a proper plan, running a draw will become a headache than a success.
