In the last 12 months, the cost of living in the United States has gone up another 2.7%. The price of groceries in the last four years has gone up more than 25%. It seems impossible to keep up with everything and stick to your budget. I’m here to tell you that it’s not only possible but there are some money-saving hacks that can help you get by while prices continue to soar. Here are a list of things you can implement to improve your financial outlook and live well.

1. Master the Art of Meal Planning

Meal planning was a game-changer for my family. I created a list of about 30 go-to meals that I knew everyone in the family enjoyed. So, each week we cycle seven meals from that list. Of course, we try new recipes occasionally and eat out here and there. However, having a plan that includes meals we enjoy throughout the week makes a huge difference and keeps us from ordering takeout. A couple of tips I always encourage when people start meal planning is to include two or three really easy meals each week. This will help ensure that when you’re tired at the end of a long day you won’t be tempted to stray from your plan (or budget). Additionally, if there is something you can cook in bulk and stash in the freezer for later, do it! It’ll save you time and money. With consistent meal planning, you’ll notice a significant difference in your monthly food budget.

2. Use Cashback and Coupon Apps

Technology offers easy ways to save money through cashback and coupon apps. Apps like Rakuten, Ibotta, and Honey can help you earn cashback or find discounts on everyday purchases. Set up alerts for deals on items you frequently buy and compare prices across stores. Many grocery apps also offer digital coupons for additional savings. Remember to only buy items you genuinely need to avoid overspending on “discounts.” Using these tools consistently can add up to hundreds of dollars in annual savings.

3. Switch to Energy-Efficient Habits

Lowering your utility bills starts with small, energy-efficient changes at home. Unplug devices when not in use and switch to LED bulbs for longer-lasting light. Consider washing clothes in cold water and air-drying them whenever possible. Installing a programmable thermostat can help you regulate heating and cooling, reducing energy usage. Sealing windows and doors also prevents drafts and lowers heating costs. Over time, these eco-friendly habits can lead to significant savings on your energy bills.

4. Shop Secondhand and Embrace Minimalism

Shopping secondhand is not only eco-friendly but also budget-friendly. Check out thrift stores, consignment shops, and online marketplaces like Poshmark or Facebook Marketplace for great deals on clothes, furniture, and appliances. Adopting a minimalist mindset helps you focus on quality over quantity, avoiding unnecessary purchases. Before buying anything new, ask yourself if it’s a want or a need. Decluttering your space and selling unused items can also earn you extra cash. By buying less and buying smart, you’ll save more.

5. Leverage Free Resources and Community Events

Many communities offer free resources that can help you save money. Public libraries provide free access to books, movies, and even online learning platforms. Look for local events such as concerts, fitness classes, or workshops that don’t cost a dime. Websites like Meetup and Eventbrite can connect you with affordable or free activities in your area. Taking advantage of free resources reduces the need to spend on entertainment or self-improvement. It’s a fun and social way to stick to your budget.

6. Automate Your Savings

Automation takes the effort out of saving money and ensures consistency. Set up an automatic transfer to your savings account each time you get paid, even if it’s a small amount. Many banks allow you to round up purchases to the nearest dollar and save the difference. Automation helps you build your savings effortlessly while avoiding the temptation to spend. Watching your savings grow over time can motivate you to stay on track. The key is to start small and adjust as your budget allows.

Small Changes, Big Savings

This list of money-saving hacks can help you save without sacrificing your quality of life. All it takes is a few simple adjustments and you’ll be able to stash away some cash while continuing to live well. In the end, the key is to just get started. Choose one (or all) of these things to implement in your own life and watch how things change for the better. So, before 2025 kicks off, make a commitment to take charge of your budget and spend (and save) smarter.
