Play of the great ones

November 11, 2019 by Susan Paige

In the minds of some people, gambling is associated with meaningless burning time and money. This opinion exists despite the fact that the craving for entertainment at all times was intrinsic to man, and played an important role in the formation of civilization. History knows many examples when the strengths of the world were interested in games and did not see anything shameful in this.

Probably no one will be surprised that celebrities love gambling no less that ordinary people do. World famous musicians, people of the acting profession, famous directors and show business stars are frequent guests of the most luxury world casinos.

Aristotle and Dice

The prolific ancient Greek philosopher sought to know human life in all its manifestations. His works influenced  science, religion and politicians development, and some concepts formed the basis of ideas about the world and still so far not questioned.

The dice game, popular during Aristotle times, attracted his attention.

He saw with what excitement his contemporaries tried to achieve loss winning combinations, and tried to approach the process from a scientific point of view.

Aristotle proved that the probability of frequent reproduction of the same combination is extremely small.

Based on his calculations, the philosopher developed the “science of the possible” and applied the principle of dice to the description of the universe, in which chance is reserved a significant role. And as a pleasant bonus he gave some tips for gambling fans that we call now ‘life hacks’

Pascal and Roulette

French mathematician, physicist and writer Blaise Pascal in the middle of the XVII century got interested in probability theory. To solving a difficult mathematical task, he was pushed by a passionate fan of gambling – Damier Mitton.

First, Pascal, like Aristotle, turned to dice. Non-trivial issue of winning problem soon attracted attention of other mathematicians. Under the Pascal influence, the Dutch scientist Christian Huygens even wrote treatise “On settlements in gambling.»

Pascal himself in his research decided not to be confined exclusively to dice. To study probability theory, he created a wheel with rotating cylinders and precisely designated numbers. This device became the prototype of roulette, which has grabbed such a popularity in European casinos then, like new casino games at King Billy now.

Dostoevsky and casino

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s craving for gambling had consequences not only for the writer himself. Thanks to this passion, the world literature replenished with the novel “Gambler“, which is still considered one of greatest artwork of all time.

For the first time, Dostoevsky joined gambling in a German resort

Wiesbaden, where he went to be treated for epilepsy. He tried to play roulette and immediately won a large sum, but could not stop and played all the money down. The passion for the game swept Dostoevsky so much that he began to develop his own system, which would allow him to enrich himself.

However, the roulette wheel refused to obey the derived patterns.

On one of his visits to Wiesbaden, Dostoevsky lost so much that

the hotel owner actually placed him under house arrest until payment of the debt.

Compatriots helped Dostoevsky pay the bills, but to correct

his financial situation, the writer entered into an agreement with the publisher Stelovsky about writing a new book. The novel “Gambler” was dictated by Dostoevsky in just 26 days, and a stenographer who helped on work, became his wife.

Nixon and poker

37th US President Richard Nixon was a big poker fan. Nixon became interested in poker while serving in the Navy during World War II war. Then the officers’ salary was $ 150, and Nixon spent part of this money for entertainment at the card table in the circle of colleagues. Future president managed to make a good fortune in his game, and after leaving Navy, has invested this money in a self-nomination congressional campaign.

Successful political career allowed Nixon to achieve top post in the United States and influence the course of world history. Already as president, he was often using skills he gained while playing poker. Assessing their opponents, Nixon compared political games to bluffs at the card table, and tried not to follow politicians who began to bargain without no reason for that.
