Keeping Cool on a Budget This Summer

July 25, 2019 by Susan Paige

With the heatwave well and truly underway, Brits are seeking out ways to keep themselves cool. However, when you don’t have a big budget to spend, it can be difficult knowing how to keep cool without breaking the bank. Fans are great, but they use a lot of electricity. So, what other options do you have to beat the heat?

Below, you’ll discover some of the best ways to keep cool on a budget this summer.

Invest in the right type of curtains

A great tip to keep your home cool in the heatwave, is to ensure you’re using the right type of curtains. Ideally, you’ll want thin cotton curtains which sit close to the window. There are a lot of different types of curtains you can invest in. You might want to invest in eyelet curtains for heat protection.

Keeping the curtains closed during the day will help to keep the heat outdoors and the inside of the home much cooler.

Put your pillowcases in the freezer

One of the main issues the heat causes is trouble with sleeping. Getting to sleep when it’s hot and humid can feel like an impossible task. So, to help you drift off to sleep in the heat, a great tip is to place your pillowcases in the freezer.

You could also do the same with a t-shirt. Once it has cooled down in the freezer, put it on before you get into bed. This won’t just feel amazing; it will also help to keep your body temperature down long enough for you to drift off to sleep.

Take a warm shower before bed

This might not sound like the best advice, but did you know that taking a warm shower before bed can help to combat the heat? When you get out of the warm water, your body actually cools itself down.

On the other hand, if you were to take a cold shower, it would make you feel even hotter afterwards. This is because your body needs to work harder to get your temperature back up. So, as relieving as a cold shower can feel in the heatwave, it can leave you feeling hotter than you started.

Take advantage of menthol sticks

Did you know you can purchase menthol sticks which can help to cool you down? If you wake up in the night for example, you can rub the menthol stick over your forehead and that will instantly help you to feel cooler.

There are lots of ways you can beat the heat this summer without having to spend a fortune. The above are just a small selection of the most effective methods you can try.
