Exploring Texas: A Guide

May 24, 2018 by Susan Paige

If you want to visit a US state that is culturally rich and offers a diverse array of cities, you will want to jump on the first flight to Texas. If you need a little convincing, here are some helpful information on what you can expect when visiting the great state of Texas.

Everything is Bigger in Texas

Everything really is bigger in Texas. Expect to see giant pickup trucks, massive hats, and an endless array of rugged terrain. You will also be both delighted and intimidated at the portion sizes, so you can trust you will never feel hungry once you arrive in the Lone Star state.

Good Ol’ Southern Hospitality

Texans are well-known for their southern hospitality, so don’t be surprised if people say howdy, ask how you are, or attempt to strike up a conversation. They will also often hold doors open for strangers, and will happily provide you with some great recommendations or directions upon request. You will feel right at home as soon as you arrive.

Must-Visit Destinations

Of course, there will be some destinations you must visit when traveling to Texas. For example, you should find the best accommodation possible when staying in Austin, and find a neighborhood which offers a vibrant art scene, live music in atmospheric bars, and delicious food truck dishes. Houston is also another popular destination to pay a visit, as it offers a wonderful theater district, 19th-century architecture, and an extensive variety of upscale restaurants.

Be Prepared for Hot Temperatures

It is rare to need a jumper during a visit to the Lone Star state, as both the west and southwest of Texas are hot and dry. Expect to experience an average temperature of 34 to 36ºC (93 to 96ºF) throughout summer, while temperatures will dip to 12 to 14ºC (54 to 57ºF) by winter.

Texans Love BBQ

If you’re a vegetarian, Texas might not be the best destination for you. If there is one thing Texans love, it is firing up a BBQ and grilling meat, especially beef. In fact, don’t be surprised to see a lot of beef on most restaurant menus.

Visit a Real Texas Rodeo

You haven’t explored true Texas until you have visited a real rodeo, which features genuine cowboys and cowgirls, who will each rope and ride various wild animals during the event. Visit the Texas Ranch Roundup in Wichita Falls, which is one of the best rodeos in the state, which features some of the best cowboys and cowgirls across Texas. It’s a cultural attraction you must experience at least once in your lifetime.

You’ll Fall in Love with Tex-Mex

It will be hard not to fall in love with Tex-Mex, regardless of what city or town you choose to visit in Texas. It is a unique, delicious fusion of Mexican and American cuisines, which are popular with locals and tourists alike. You can find the dishes in a hole-in-the-wall, chain, or independent restaurant. The flavors are bound to linger on your taste buds long after the trip is over.
