Etiquette Guidelines For The Company Picnic

July 19, 2019 by Lucinda Honeycutt

It’s summer and many companies are having a company picnic at some point. Some companies include spouses, partners, and children. These picnics are for the employees to relax and talk to others in the company. Family members can get to know the co-workers they hear so much about. As loose as the event is, there are still some etiquette guidelines to follow when at a company picnic.

Attend The Event

Some people avoid the events that companies put together. I get it. Who wants to spend some leisure time canoodling with the co-workers? This is a perfect time for the company to give thanks to you for your hard work. You will have a better chance of talking with managers and CEOs at an event like this. Networking is a way to get your foot in the door for new opportunities.

Behave as You Would in the Workplace

Even though this is a fun event, behave. You are enjoying some relaxed time but now is not the time to let your manners go. If you wouldn’t tell that joke in the office, don’t tell it at the picnic. Your superiors are still watching and want to know who is “management material”.

Moderation is Important

Many companies will offer wine and beer at company picnics. If you don’t drink, you don’t have to worry. If you love a cold beer or crisp wine, you need to slow it down. While you may drink often at home, the company picnic is not the place to do it. Limit yourself to only one or two. Eat along with the drink so you don’t become inebriated. Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated when outdoors.

Don’t Let Your Dress Slip

It’s hot and a picnic is a fun time for shorts and tee-shirts. Make sure not to show too much. Men and women both need to wear clean tee’s and blouses. Shorts should not be too short and thongs should not be visible while wearing shorts.

Be Mindful Of Children

If you are a childless person at this family affair, mind your tongue. No adult conversations or adult language. If you bring your child to the company picnic, keep an eye on them. This is not the time to practice free-range parenting. Sure, you can let them run and play with other children. If they misbehave, you take care of it immediately.

Avoid Office Talk

Enjoying hotdogs with the co-workers can often illicit office talk. Don’t. If the conversation steers towards work things, stop it right there. This is a fun time, leave work behind. Get to know your co-workers rather than asking when reports will be ready.

Company picnics are a gift to the employees for their hard work. It’s a chance for you to take a break and relax with your co-workers. Spend time with co-workers you don’t work with on the regular. Talk about movies, television, or the food. Relax.
