A Guide to Renting in South Carolina

December 23, 2021 by Susan Paige

South Carolina is a beautiful state that’s well known for its beautiful beaches, and the incredible weather, so many people are moving out to get a slice of paradise.  It’s important, before you move, to have a realistic view of the state!  These are some facts and tips to keep in mind before you move.

Pay Attention to Flooded Areas

While apartment hunting, you may notice that some areas seem incredibly cheap compared to others.  There can be a few reasons for this: but one of the biggest reasons is past flooding.

Be careful if these apartments have flooded within the last five years or have a flooding history.  You’ll have to have renters’ insurance, but you also don’t want your belongings to get damaged.  South Carolina deals with many storms and flooding, so you must go into this with a plan.

It’s The Humidity that Gets You

Summers do get hot in South Carolina, but it’s not the heat alone that can feel like torture: it’s the humidity that makes it the worst.  Ensure that whatever apartment you decide to rent has air conditioning so that you can keep cool in the worst weather.  While you’re living there, check your lease to see if it’s their responsibility or yours to replace the air filters: and make sure they get replaced every other month at the very least.  Filtering out allergens and having good air conditioning will make this state’s weather far more tolerable.

Ensure That You Have Good Transit

Most of the public transit in South Carolina is in city centers only, and even then, it can be slower or less reliable.  To avoid this problem, it’s a good idea to own a vehicle of your own.  This is also a great way to ensure that you’re not stuck out in the dense heat of the summers here so that you can arrive where you want to go without feeling sticky or sweaty.

Research an Area Before You Move

Get to know the area you’re interested in before you move.  Although most of South Carolina is vibrant and incredible, there are some areas where you may not feel as welcome. For example, there are a lot of differing opinions on politics that have only grown louder in recent years, so it’s a good idea to ensure that you’re moving to an area you’ll get to connect with people who you’ll understand,  instead of heading into a place that would make you uncomfortable.

Closer to the Beach Means More Expensive

There’s no such thing as an inexpensive apartment that has views of the ocean.  The closer to the beach you get, the more expensive it will be.  This is why Myrtle Beach apartments will always be more costly than Charleston apartments.  This doesn’t mean that you have to settle for a property you don’t love, though!  Pay attention to the pricing, and possibly give up the idea of viewing the beach from your apartment so that, in turn, you can walk or bike to it in a reasonable amount of time.
