Improve your psychometric test score in just five hours

February 6, 2020 by Susan Paige

Psychometric testing may seem daunting, but we’re here to show you that with just a few  hours to spare, you can improve your score and set yourself up for success…

  • Hour one

First things first, it’s time to get prepared. We always recommend starting the test preparation process by finding out as much as you can about the company that you’re taking the test for. What do they value? Why do they want you to take a test like this? What sort of things would you be doing day-to-day in your role? The type of psychometric test you’ll be taking will be determined by the kind of job you’ll be doing. E.g. if it’s in the police force it’s more likely to be communication based, whereas those going into banking will face numerical problems. Getting under the company’s skin a little more will help motivate you, and hone your understanding of why you need to take a psychometric test.

  • Hour two

Allocate yourself a work space where you feel comfortable practising the mock tests. It should be well-lit, quiet and free from distractions. In it you’ll need a pen and paper, a computer or tablet, a glass of water and a timer so you can practise under test conditions. You could share what you’re doing with a friend or family member so they know not to disturb you, but also so they can offer words of encouragement should you find it hard to motivate yourself.

  • Hour three

It’s time to get online! At Practice Aptitude Tests you can take free psychometric tests to get a sense of the kinds of questions you’re likely to encounter on the big day. Not only will practising these tests help you get better and better, you can also read or watch videos that share top tips and tricks for passing, track your scores, and learn how to improve on your weaker areas.

  • Hour four

Now that you’ve found out more about the psychometric test you’ll be taking, set your room up and logged on to Practice Aptitude Tests – there’s no escaping the fact that it’s time to get practising! The first test you take might not go as well as planned, but answer as many questions as you can, and try to get to grips with the different styles of questions you see along the way. You might also start to get a sense of which areas you find harder. All of this is really helpful – because you’re starting to get a clearer picture of your strengths as a candidate, and the areas you may need to work on to impress future employers. Although this guide shows you how to get set up in just a few hours, we recommend practising as many tests as you can before you sit the most important one of all.

  • Hour five

Taking the time to go back over your work is really important. Every candidate will have areas they struggle with, and this is your time to figure out what these are, and use all the resources you have at your disposal to improve them. You can also draw a lot of confidence from the areas you’re better at and use that on the day to bolster you when you need it.

When it comes to psychometric testing, there really is no substitute for practice. And while this quick five hour guide will help you get set up, we recommend dedicating a lot more time to taking mock tests and reviewing your answers. It may seem hard at first, but it’ll be worth it when your results reflect your hard work. Good luck!
