More than most, 2017 is a volatile year for business: political changes on both sides of the Atlantic have created a large amount of doubt. Whatever the results of, for example, Britain leaving the European Union prove to be, the current climate of uncertainty is not the ideal one to do business in.
One of the main things you can do to proof your business for the choppy waters ahead is make sure you’re hiring the write talent: getting people into your business that have the expertise to help navigate this uncertain future. Even if you’re not looking to hire specific staff that specialise in, for example, European law, making sure you’re hiring cleverly to really meet your meets will stop you making unnecessary hires who don’t add vital value to your business.
First and most importantly, when you’re hiring, make a list of what you need: wanting to hire a ‘Account Manager’ will make your job difficult. Take the time to think about what the ideal Account Manager would look like specifically for your business. Vicky Maxwell Davies of Savannah Recruitment has some recommendations: “this might include particular sector knowledge, experience of e-business, leading very large teams or working across Europe”.
Define clearly what skills or competencies you require, and what experience you feel is necessary. Even if the candidate you opt for can demonstrate all the skills you require in terms of reporting tools, if you expect them to operate in a managerial role and they haven’t any experience in that area you will handicap their ability to do even the parts of the job they are highly qualified for well.
Having produced a well defined profile of your ideal employee you can decide how to assess if candidates fit that profile: which questions you can ask that give them the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and experience you’ve decided on. For some skills it may be appropriate to set a short test: ensure you inform your candidates about this first. This will allow them to show themselves at their best. Not keeping your candidates fully informed handicaps their ability to show you if they are fit for the job and may create resentment that could lead to them not accepting a position even if they are your ideal hire.
If you follow these guidelines you should be able to find the right hire when you need them.
